TOMORROW: LGBT Equality Day in the Kansas Statehouse (Updated)

Join Equality Kansas and our allies for Equality Day 2017 at the Kansas State Capitol!

We have a robust agenda for the 2017/2018 Legislative sessions.  We have now introduced bills to add sexual orientation and gender identity to our state’s non-discrimination laws, to repeal the unconstitutional bans on same-sex marriage, to repeal the unconstitutional sodomy laws making it a crime to be LGBT, and to repeal last year’s bill making it legal for taxpayer-funded campus groups to kick people out over religious differences.

We have also, in coordination with “50 Bills 50 States” (https://50bills50states.org/), introduced a bill banning the use of “conversion therapy” on minors.  “Conversion therapy” is a horrific practice which devalues children and their uniqueness, and forces them to be “straight.”

Additionally, we are working non-stop to kill this year’s so-called “bathroom” bill, which puts another bounty on the heads of schoolchildren who happen to be transgender.

SCHEDULE:

9:00am: Registration and Check-In Opens, 2nd Floor Rotunda

9:30am to 10:00am: Orientation and Talking Points Review

10:30am to 11:00am: Orientation and Talking Points Review (repeat)

11:30am to 12:30pm: Rally and March, Capitol South Steps

12:30pm to 1:15pm: Lunch

1:30pm to 2:00pm: Orientation and Talking Points Review (repeat)

2:30pm to 3:00pm: Orientation and Talking Points Review (repeat)

ARRIVING AT THE CAPITOL:

The Kansas State Capitol is at 300 SW 10th St, Topeka, KS.

The public entrance is at the intersection of SW 8th and SW Van Buren in Topeka, KS [http://goo.gl/maps/X987F], on the north side of the Capitol building. Be prepared for airport-style security. All visitors must pass through a security checkpoint, and all bags are screened through an x-ray machine.

Please note:  Statehouse policy prohibits signs and banners being carried inside.

Parking can be difficult. For a good spot, plan to arrive in Topeka early.

-There is metered parking around the Capitol. The meters cost $1 per hour, accept quarters, and are limited from 1 hour to 10 hours depending on where you are parked. Overtime parking tickets are $15 for the first ticket, with fines increasing if you`ve had Topeka parking tickets in the past.

-There is additional parking in per-hour parking garages on 8th near Kansas Street [http://goo.gl/maps/2dbUj] and 9th near Kansas Street [http://goo.gl/maps/ZdK5A], within easy walking distance of the capitol.

-There is a two-hour parking lot southwest of the capitol at SW 10th and Topeka Blvd [http://goo.gl/maps/NQtzB]. If you plan to attend the rally only, this parking lot will be a good option for you.
