HB 2238 Veto Override

By a vote of 84-40, the Kansas House of Representatives overrode the Governor’s veto of HB2238. This trans sports ban will unfairly prevent transgender school kids, as early as kindergarten, from playing sports or participating in competitive activities with their friends. As we’ve seen with discussions on trans issues in Kansas and around the nation this bill is based on misinformation, false science, and homophobia. As the opponents of this bill have stated many times, this does nothing to improve women’s rights as proponents have suggested. If the proponents of this bill cared about women they would be fighting for equal pay, equal opportunities, and more funding for women’s sports, but they are not. All this is, is state sanctioned bullying of children.

Every Democratic state representative except Representative Robinson voted to sustain the Governor’s veto. We are deeply disappointed in Representative Robinson on his vote to overturn the veto.  We want to thank Representative Schreiber and Representative Younger for crossing party lines to vote no on this hateful legislation.

If you have a few minutes, take some time to send thank you notes to the legislators who voted to sustain the veto.  It’s particularly important that Republicans who voted to sustain hear from you.  While many of us look with disdain on a Republican Party that has made attacking the LGBTQ community a core part of their platform, those who stood with us still deserve your gratitude. Finally, please send your thanks to Governor Laura Kelly, who has supported LGBTQ equality since her first day as a Senator in 2005.
