Equality Kansas Meeting 09/28/2015
Attendees: Luc B., Stephanie M, Benedette K, Jackie Lakin, Darin Stephens, Brian Laird, Dan Brennan, Candace Young.
Meeting was called to order at 7:02 PM.
The minutes from July were approved by unanimous vote.
Chair report: Luc on PRIDE – “Awesome, exciting, first time marching and first time representing BTMI in a parade.”
Vice-chair report: Benedette – There is a Facebook for Bowling for Equality, per Stephanie. Stephanie will also publicize it via UUFT, Jackie volunteered to talk to the UUFT minister about it.
Treasurer: Stephanie – $85 in the bank, and $60 in ticket sales money not yet turned in (of which EQ would keep 50%).
Chapter Conference: Stephanie – Conference is monthly, to help coordinate efforts among the various chapters.
New Business: – Stephanie spoke about efforts to get the politicians to better understand and respond to LGBT issues. We need to do better to have candidates in all political races that will stand up for us. We’re seeing backlash to Marriage equality, which will hit oppressed/disenfranchised minorities the hardest. Legislators need to hear from their constituents on these issues all over the state.
Jackie L: Jackie is initiating a campaign for US Congress House of Representatives 2nd District, as an Independent/Liberal/Progressive, and wants to hear from us about our concerns. Stephanie will alert the political action committee about her campaign. Jackie expects to have a website up within the next couple of weeks.
Equality Efforts: Stephanie – Gave out lists of candidates in some prior Kansas House and Senate races, as well as results of two bills that we opposed (both of which failed to pass), and who supported or voted against them. We discussed projections of which races may have equality as factor. No current activity, re Topeka City Council in specific, but in general, we need to keep our city council educated on our needs.
Meeting adjourned at 8:33 PM.
