New “bathroom” bill on its way

State Representative John Whitmer (R-Haysville)

On Thursday, Kansas state Representative John Whitmer (R-Haysville) announced to the media he would be introducing restricting transgender student access to bathrooms.  Whitmer, who backed last year’s failed $2500 “bounty” legislation, claims this year’s bill will not be putting a price on the heads of little kids.  Whitmer also threatened, during last summer’s special budget session, to bring back bathroom transgender-bounty legislation “if the Democrats start trying to muck us up.”

The 2017 legislation has not yet been drafted or given a bill number.

As always, Equality Kansas will work with legislative allies to block and defeat anti-LGBT legislation in our state capitol.  Stay tuned as this story develops.

In the meantime, if you’d like to share your thoughts with Representative Whitmer, his contact information can be found on the Kansas Legislature’s website. If you call, please be polite to his staff.
