Greetings Southwest Chapter members –

I will be hosting a discussion on how to reorganize the KEC Southwest Chapter this Saturday. Since the chapter`s founding chair, Anne Mitchell, moved to California, Southwest has fallen onto some hard times.

Southwest Kansas is one of the most rapidly growing regions of the state, with much of the grown coming in the Hispanic community. This is reflected in the area high schools` Gay/Straight Alliances – an increasing number of the young people who are involved are Hispanic. It`s vital that our organization, and especially our Southwest chapter, be relevant and responsive to their needs.

With the rapidly changing demographics, there is room for a progressive, pro-equality message in Southwest Kansas. Three of the four Kansas counties with voter registration rates below 25% are in the southwest corner – Ford, Finney, and Seward. They also have the lowest turnout percentage. Those numbers don`t improve until people believe they have a stake in the outcome of elections. Our organization can play a role, in cooperation with others, in giving southwest Kansans with a progressive ideology a reason to participate.

I look forward to seeing you, whether you`re a current KEC member are not. All are welcome.
